Caulk Your Way to Energy Savings

Are you looking for energy savings? Here’s a few ideas on how to save a little, while making your home a little more comfortable.

Seal Cracks and Openings

Cracks and openings in your home let warm air out in the winter and cold air out in the summer. A small opening can cost you big bucks in energy costs over a period of time. However, these small openings can easily be sealed with caulk. However, for slightly larger openings use an expanding foam product.

Here’s a Hint

The best way to apply caulk requires two things. First, a small bowl of water. Second, a finger. Apply the caulk from the tube along the area you wish to seal. Then, wet your finger and run it along the caulk to even it out. This fills in any gaps in the caulk and makes it look better. Don’t be afreadi to redo it until it looks goods. Then let it dry.

If you have a basement, wait for a bright sunny day. Cover any windows, then turn off the lights. Then look for daylight coming through. If you find any openings, plug them up.

Windy days can also help with energy savings. Light a candle then go slowly around the exterior baseboards, doors and windows. Don’t forget the electrical outlets and switches on exterior walls. Also check around recessed ceiling lighting. If you see the flame wavering, that’s a sign that there’s an air leak.

Another detection tool is an inexpensive infrared temperature gun. Simply point it at any surface to find the temperature. If it varies from nearby surfaces, you have a leak.

When applying caulk to seal an air leak, clean the surface first, then apply a thin continuous bead around the surface to be sealed. Then – wet your finger with water and run your finger along the bead to spread and smooth it out.

Caulking is an inexpensive and easy way to save on energy costs
